Play First, Sign Up Later

One of the biggest friction points in Free Flick Football was the sign-in wall. Want to play online? Sign in first. Want to buy PRO? Create an account. Want to track your stats? Better log in. Every gate between the player and the game is a chance for them to leave instead.

We've torn down most of those walls. You can now play online matches as an anonymous guest — the game generates a temporary session ID so the multiplayer system can track your connection without requiring a full account. You show up as 'Guest' to your opponent, and the game plays exactly the same.

PRO purchases work without an account too. Tap the PRO button, complete the Stripe checkout, and you're a PRO player immediately. If you create an account later, the purchase carries over. This was surprisingly tricky to wire up — we needed to associate a Stripe payment with either a user ID or a device fingerprint, then reconcile the two if the player eventually signs in.

The philosophy is simple: let people play the game first. If they enjoy it enough to want persistent stats, a display name, or friend lists, they'll create an account on their own terms. Forcing sign-in before the player has experienced the game is putting the cart before the horse.

We still show gentle sign-in prompts at natural moments — after your third game, after a win streak, or when you try to access a feature that genuinely requires an account (like friend lists). But these are suggestions, not gates. You can always dismiss them and keep playing.

The results speak for themselves. Since removing the early sign-in requirements, more players are reaching their third game — and more of those players are choosing to create accounts voluntarily. Reducing friction didn't reduce sign-ups; it increased them.
